  ·        Belongs to Prokaryotes family.

  1.     ·        Oldest known microorganisms on the Earth.
  2.     ·        They are unicellular organisms.
  3.     ·        Mostly found in a moist environment.
  4.     ·        Do not possess any membrane bound organelles.
  5.     ·        DNA is not enclosed within the nucleus.
  6.     ·        Does not contain true nucleus.
  7.     ·        Contain different types of bacteria and mycoplasma.

     Characteristic of Kingdom Monera
  •  Unicellular Organisms
  •  Prokaryotic Organisms
  •  DNA is naked & is not bound by a nuclear membrane.
  •  Contain 70S Ribosomes.
  •  Cell wall is rigid & and made up of peptidoglycan.
  •  They show different modes of nutrition like autotrophic, parasitic, heterotrophic and saprophytic.
  •  Reproduce asexually by binary fission or budding.
  •  They are environmental decomposers.
  •  Flagellum serves as the locomotory organ.
  • The lack of organelles such as centrosomes, Endoplasmic Reticulum, plastids, golgi bodies, lysosomes, mitochondria, etc.

Classification of Monera

Archaebacteria

Eubacteria

Cyanobacteria

Archaebacteria
·        Most ancient bacteria.
·        Found in extreme habitats.
[Such as salty region (halophiles)]
[Hot Spring (thermoacidophiles)]
[Marshy area (methanogens)]
·        The cell wall structure is different from other bacteria which help to survive in extreme climate.
·        Mode of Nutrition – Autotrophic
Eubacteria
·        Eubacteria is also known as True Bacteria.
·        Cell wall rigid & and made up of peptidoglycans.
·        On the cell surface of bacteria, contain short appendages, known as Pili. It helps the bacteria during sexual reproduction.
·
Eubacteria - - Rhizobium & Clostridium

Cyanobacteria
·        Also known as Blue –Green Algae.
·        Found in Aquatic region.
·        Photosynthetic in nature. Contain chlorophyll, carotenoids and phycobilins.
·
Cyanobacteria – Anabaena, Nostoc, Spirulina.
