Kingdom Protista
- Belongs to unicellular eukaryotic organisms.
- Have well-defined nucleus and also membrane bound cell organelles.
- Kingdom Protista includes unicellular algae including diatoms, desmids and dinoflagellates.
- Also includes slime moulds and euglena like organisms.
- Locomotion occur with the help of hair-like structures called cilia (Paramecium), whip-like structures called Flagella (Euglena) or pseudopodia (Amoeba).
- Some protists are plant-like with cellulosic cell wall and chloroplasts and are called Algae.
- Some protists have animals like cell (without cell wall and chloroplasts). They are known as Protozoans and are heterotrophs or holozoic.
- Example: Diatoms, unicellular algae and Dinoflagellates, etc.
Protozoa
- Protozoa are considered as a sub-kingdom of the Kingdom Protista.
- These are Heterotrophs and are predators or parasites.
- It is further classified on the basis of their locomotory structure_ _Amoeboid Protozoans, Flagellated Protozoans, Ciliated protozoans, sporozoans.
Amoeboid Protozoans
- Generally aquatic or may also be found on moist soil.
- These animals move with the help of temporary cell extensions called pseudopodia.
- Pseudopodia also help them in capturing pray by phagocytosis.
- Example : Amoeba
